Book Review- Marie Dancing

This review is by Hannah from Springston Primary School.
Hannah wrote this review when she was 10 years old.

Marie Dancing
by Carolyn Meyer
HarcourtBooks, 2005, 260 pages

How easy was it to get stuck into this book?
When Marie (the main character and a dancer) was getting called over by Monsieur Degas (the artist), it was quite complicated, after that though it was quite a flowing and easy book to follow.

Who are the main characters?
The main character is Marie, who is a professional dancer at the Paris Opera.
One day when she was just ending ballet class, she was called over by the
famous artist Monsieur Degas who wanted her to pose for him. Marie is dedicated to her work and overcomes great obstacles to be her best.

What's the story line?
This story follows Marie's life, dancing all day long and then on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings posing for Monsieur Degas. She has to go to classes with an empty stomach because all the money she earns from dancing goes towards the rent for their house and the wine her mother drinks all night long. Marie's mother is an alcoholic. This makes Marie and her sisters' lives so much harder.

I rate this book:
9/10

How's it written?
The book is written from the narrator's point of view. It is quite sad in some bits, but the sadness leads to happiness.

Other books by the same author Hannah knows about:
Loving Will Shakespeare
White Lilacs
Beware, Princess Elizabeth
Mary, Bloody Mary

  1. Hi Hannah, This sounds like a really good book to read. Marie sounds like she has heaps of courage and resilience. I will look out for this book in libraries.
